Single Storey Extensions · South West England
The extension
your home has
been waiting for.
A well-designed single storey extension changes everything. Not just the square footage – the way light moves through your home, the way your family uses it every day, the way it feels to come through the door.
Why Single Storey
More than extra
square metres.
The single storey rear extension is the most popular home improvement in the UK for good reason. Done properly, it’s transformative.
Most families reach a point where their home works against them. The kitchen that doesn’t have room for everyone. The dining space that’s too small. The dark rear room that feels disconnected from the garden.
A single storey extension – done thoughtfully, with the right builder, to a proper brief – fixes all of that. It opens up the ground floor, brings light in, and creates the kind of space that becomes the centre of family life.
At Kura Spaces, we work exclusively on this kind of project. We understand what makes an extension feel like it was always there – and our job is to make sure yours does too.

Optional Add-ons
Make it
exactly yours.
Your extension arrives as a beautiful shell. Add what matters to you and see the price update in real time in our configurator.
A fixed roof lantern floods the space with natural light from above. Transformative in deeper extensions where light from the rear alone isn’t enough.
An electrically operated opening skylight with rain sensor. Adds ventilation as well as light – particularly useful in kitchen extensions.
Sits within a pitched or sloped roof section – cleaner look than a standard flat rooflight, works beautifully on shallow-pitch single storey extensions.
The ceiling follows the roofline rather than being flat – creates a dramatic, light-filled space. Most effective on single storey rear extensions. Subject to structural feasibility.
Full-height glazed doors onto a railing. Brings the outside in without needing a step out. Most relevant on two storey and loft projects.
Connected to your existing boiler or heat pump. Even heat, invisible, compatible with most flooring types.
Lower install cost – ideal for smaller areas or where connecting to the heating system isn’t practical.
Zone-controlled smart heating with app control. Works with Nest, Hive, or similar. Installed during the build.
Large-format porcelain paving for a seamless indoor-outdoor flow from your new extension. Installed during the build.
Recessed ground lights, wall-mounted uplighters, or soffit downlights. Wired during the build, ready from day one.
A dedicated EV charger wired in during the build – far cheaper now than retrofitting later.
Shaker or slab cabinetry, laminate or stone worktops, mid-range integrated appliances, stainless sink.
Solid oak or handleless cabinetry, quartz or marble worktops, premium appliances, undermount sink, statement tap.
Bath or shower, WC, vanity basin, tiling, towel rail, and ventilation. Mid-range sanitaryware from our curated range.
Frameless shower, wall-hung WC and vanity, premium tapware, heated towel rail, full-height tiling.
Base units, worktop, sink, plumbing for washing machine and dryer, storage, tiled floor.
Hard-wired ethernet throughout – easy to install during the build, expensive to retrofit later.
Planning & Regulations
What you need
to know about
planning permission.
Most single storey extensions fall under Permitted Development – no planning application required. Here’s how to know where you stand.
Full Planning GuidePermitted Development
Most single storey rear extensions can be built under Permitted Development. For detached houses you can extend up to 8 metres from the rear wall; for semi-detached or terraced properties, 6 metres.
Prior Approval
Extensions between 4–8m (detached) or 3–6m (semi/terrace) require Prior Approval under the Neighbour Consultation Scheme. Simpler than full planning and usually granted.
When Full Planning Is Needed
Conservation areas, AONBs, and listed buildings face tighter controls. Your matched Kura builders will flag this early.
Building Regulations
Always required regardless of planning. Covers structural integrity, insulation, fire safety, drainage, and electrics. Your builder handles all of this.
